A rider is a contractual proviso that outlines a series of stipulations or requests between at least two parties. While they can be attached to leases and other legal documents, they’re most famously used by musicians or bands to outline how they need their equipment to be set up and arranged, how they like their dressing room organized, and what types of food and beverages they require. Anyone who’s seen Spinal Tap knows these requests can be extremely outrageous and unreasonable. (And, in the case of Iggy Pop’s, unexpectedly hilarious.)

I was inspired to create this series after reviewing a few riders from some of the biggest acts in the world, all of which were ridiculous. But what I found most interesting about them is that they offered a glimpse into their larger-than-life personalities.

I initially thought I would try and shoot all of the items listed on the catering riders but quickly realized that this would become an exercise in wasting money. So I decided to focus on the quirkiest requests and shoot them in a Flemish Baroque still-life style because I felt that there was a direct connection between the themes in these types of paintings and the riders: the idea of time passing and the ultimate mortality of a musician’s career as the limelight inevitably fades—they only have a short time in which they are able to make these demands and have them fulfilled.

As it’s essentially a book for individuals eager to find a place in the styling industry, there are tons of informative photographs and explanations on industry lingo, most of which anyone with an interest in celebrity rags and/or fashion would or probably should be aware of. It also gives sound advice and additional reading suggestions, a glossary, a list of websites and resources, and, quite amusingly, an UsWeekly-esque chapter on fashion crimes committed by assorted celebrities, replete with opinions, photos and details on the “infringements” in question.

If you have any desire to get a pretty precise and informed, inside perspective on the styling world or simply enjoy an unabashed reading of humorous tabloid copy, I recommend Secrets of Stylists. It might not change your life, but it will certainly satisfy.

Boozehound

This past Sunday morning we picked Ryan up from the train station in Tui, as he’d been on a wine tasting trip in Portugal the previous two weeks on business and had a day to spare, so he decided to come visit us in Galicia. Having requested a chance to glimpse the water, we took him down the coast by car, through Baiona and along the rías, passing through Oia, A Guarda and O Rosal.

A good half hour later, as we tried to get our bearings on where exactly the fuck we were, we happened upon the Terras Gauda bodegas with much excitement. We decided to see if they’d give us a free wine tasting, hoping we’d be able to use Ryan’s business card as our golden ticket for cost-free pre-lunch booze. It worked.

I’m surprised they were even open on a Sunday (apparently they’re one of the very few (perhaps only) wineries in the area that do this). The patient woman working the small tasting area gave us the rundown on their other wines, two of which I’d never encountered before.

The La Mar was unavailable for sampling because its production was extremely limited, which naturally piqued our interest and we bought several bottles of it. The Abadía is the only one that is wholly Albariño, as the others are made up of 70 and 10 percent, mixed with other regional grapes varieties. Having said that, I quite liked the Abadía de San Campio because it seemed to taste crisper and cleaner (in my view, which really doesn’t account for much, as my palate is a drunken whore at a frat party when it comes to white wine) than the others.

The last wine she let us try was a rosé that I wasn’t particularly fond of, but which A loved and, of course, also proceeded to purchase. It’s called Tres Obispos and is manufactured by a subsidiary bodega of the Terras Gauda group called Pittacum, located in León.

We fully intend on going back and doing a full tour of the premises and another tasting soon. An added plus was that we came across two (or was it three?) other bodegas on our way home, so at least we have something to look forward to on future trips: hangovers.

Hollingsworth v. Perry.

SOTOMAYOR: I don't quite understand it: if you're not dealing with this as a class question, then why do you say the government is NOT free to discriminate against them?
COOPER: Well, Your Honor, I think it's a very different question whether the government can proceed arbitrarily and irrationally with respect to any group of people, regardless of whether or not they qualify under this Court's traditional test for suspectedness. And, and, and, uh, the hypothetical I understood you to be offering -- I would submit that would create, uh, it would, it it it, unless there's something that is occurring to me immediately,an arbitrary and capricious distinction among similarly-situated individuals. That is what we think is at the root of the traditional definition of marriage.
JUSTICE KAGAN: Mr. Cooper, could I just understand your argument? Reading the briefs, it seems as though your principal argument is that same-sex and oppostie-sex couples are not "similarly-situated" because opposite-sex couples can procreate; same-sex couples cannot, and the State's principle interest in marriage is in regulating procreation. Is that basically correct?
COOPER: Uh, Your Honor, that's the essential thrust of our position, yes.
KAGAN: Is there -- so you have a reason for not including, then, same-sex couples. Is there any reason for you have for EXcluding them? In other words, you're saying "Well, if we allow same-sex couples to marry, it doesn't serve the State's interest." But do you go further and say that it HARMS any State interest?
COOPER: Your Honor, we go further in the sense that it is reasonable to be very concerned that redefining marriage to, as a genderless institution, could well lead, over time, to harm that institution, and to the interests that society has always used that institution to address But --
KAGAN: Can you explain that a little bit to me? Just because I did not pick this up in your briefs: what harm you see happening, and when and how? What harm to the institution of marriage, or to opposite-sex couples? How does this cause and effect work?
COOPER: Once again, I, uh, uh,would reiterate that that's the correct legal question that's before the Court, and that the correct question is whether or not, um, redefining marriage to include same-sex couples would advance the interests of marriage as (crosstalk) --
JUSTICE KENNEDY: Well then are you conceding the point that there is no harm or denigration to traditional, opposite-sex marriage couples? You're conceding that?
COOPER: No, Your Honor. I'm not conceding that.
KENNEDY: Well, then it seems to me you should address Justice Kagan's question.
COOPER: Thank you, Justice Kennedy.

She’s just a sweater, a scarf, a smart phone and a McQueeny pair of sunglasses away from a mid-afternoon journey with a lady of the night…. Yet somehow, she is kind of pulling this off, isn’t she?

“At least I wouldn’t skin a Collie to make my...

“At least I wouldn’t skin a Collie to make my backpack”.

Not that this even looks like a Collie; more of a Lhasa apso or even a Shih tzu. Despite the horrid notion of a puppy as a purse, I do like the colour complementing going on overall. However, that still doesn’t make up for the fact that this would have been a bigger hit at any rave in the mid-90s. E-tard’s delight. Or nightmare, depending on how fucked up said e-tard might be.
